"The Pattaya Country Club may have an inside track with the weather gods. This 1st of February found cracks in the overcast showing that there was, in fact, a sun back there. Good overcast until around the 14th hole when the sun appeared in all it's glory. A good turn out with 17 players teeing off beginning at 6:30 AM. The course was in good shape, fairways nicely mowed and greens-green. Back at Caddy Shack II the scores were tallied and coming in 1st was R.Kevin Worl with 41 points. Jim (free drop) Hern came in with 37. Larry Emerson and Vance Millar followed with 36 and 35 respectively. Herbie furnished the usual snacks along with sliced ham and sausage links." R. Kevin Worl on the left with Jim Hern on the right.

Thursday, 2nd February – Mountain Shadow – Stableford
Dicky & Bo On Top At The Mountain!
Another good field of 34 golfers were signed up to take on the challenge of one of our favourite courses, Mountain Shadow and we welcomed Martin Hennerberger from Vancouver, Canada, Terry Pettitt from Surrey, England & Ing Magnerdsson from Iceland. We managed to depart the Kronny a couple of minutes early at 0813 hrs and arrived at our destination 46 minutes later to find the course reasonably busy. As has been the policy of late we sent a couple of three balls off first and the first one hit off 25 minutes ahead of schedule at 0935 hrs in fine but overcast conditions. The course was as usual in excellent shape and the greens splendid although some were a tad slower than normal. As the skies grew darker and thunder & lightning appeared it was necessary to take shelter for around 15 minutes just past the half way mark but the rain soon cleared and we were able to continue without any further delays. Even with the delay we completed our full round in four hours and twenty minutes.
There were 2 flights on the day plus rewards for nearest the pin on the four par threes & longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth greens.
A couple of 42 point rounds meant a count back was necessary to determine the winner of A Flight and Tricky Dicky Kubicki (23 point back nine) emerged victorious with Rob Brown (20 point back nine) taking second spot. Peter Sindberg finished third...

Wednesday, 1st February – Wangjuntr Valley Course – Stableford Bernek & Walsh Victorious!
This was a first time for most of us to the Wangjuntr complex and today we elected to play the Valley layout. After an overnight cancellation we were left with a good Wednesday field of 27 golfers and we welcomed Mike Deverell from London and Mike Gaussa paying us another visit from Tropical Berts. As the journey is a fairly long one we were hoping to depart at 0800 hrs but someone was running late so we left the Kronny at 0810 hrs and arrived at Wangjuntr one hour & twenty minutes later. The weather was great and the course looking ominous for us first timers and we sent the three ball away first at 1015 hrs. There were many positives to come out of our excursion and unfortunately a couple of negatives. As stated before the course was awesome and in fine condition and although the greens were massive & undulating they were in terrific condition. On the down side there were no drinks available on the course and on such a hot day this was somewhat of a drawback and also many of the caddies were extremely inexperienced in fact none of the caddies in our group knew which way to go to the second tee from the first green. Fortunately a couple of golfers in our group had played the course before so we eventually got on the right track. Apart from the lengthy walks from some greens to the next tees there were no other delays as the course was very quiet but it was nonetheless a five hour...

Tuesday The 24th January 2012: Khao Kheow ( Stableford)
A full house met at Bert’s a little later than usual as we had a later tee off at  Khao Kheow. Knowing that we usually have a 1000 o’clock tee off, when we cannot get away to a normal start, it meant we were in for a long day. The old, ‘get there early and maybe we can get away early’ tends to not work very well these days as the Courses tend to book their start times very carefully, and so we found it on this day. A full Course, we were going to have to rely on the speed of the players ahead.

However we were away as close to the correct time as it is possible with a packed course and as is usual these days the wind was blowing pretty hard if a bit on and off. With a full Course we tended to bunch up on the Par 3’s but it was a good time to sit and chat to the other golfers also waiting. Indeed it seemed to sharpen our first group as the ‘Scribe’ put the ball to under a foot at ‘The Island Green’. Beat that Mashi.

The Course at present, besides being a tough, well presented Course is at present, in my opinion, in as good a condition as any Course around. The Fairways are well grassed, the greens quick and true and the rough as penal as ever. This is certainly the complete package at present. We played B & C and as is normal the C Nine proved to be really  the hardest Nine, and was harder as soon as as we teed off on C1 into a howling gale, or so it seemed.  We always...

Monday, 30th January – Treasure Hill – Stableford
Blackburn & Herridge On Top At Treasure Hill!
There had been overnight rain and the sky was overcast but as usual we were confident of fine weather and had it not been for yet another annoying “no show” we would have had a full field of 40 for the challenging Treasure Hill Golf & Country Club. Hearty welcomes were handed out to Peter Sindberg from Denmark, Jacky Wan from Hong Kong & Pierre Zbinden and Noy Phintam from Nairobi, Kenya. After departing the Kronny in four mini vans right on 0815 hrs we arrived at the course 46 minutes later to find the checking in area quite busy with lots of people arriving at the same time. There was no rush for us though and after waiting for a couple of groups to tee off we sent our first group, a three ball off at 0945 hrs, 15 minutes ahead of schedule. As reported earlier there was lots of cloud cover as we commenced our round with very little wind but although somewhat humid the weather was perfect for golf. Once more the course continues to improve with lots of work going on and the greens were excellent and at times very quick. The pace was good and after a drink break on the second nine we managed to finish our round in four hours & fifteen minutes.
There were 2 flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 20 and B Flight for 21 and over. There were rewards for nearest the pin on all four par threes and longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth greens. Read More...

Emerald G.C. Stableford
A fine morning and a good turnout today for our visit to the ever popular Emerald course. Although it was the Chinese New Year holiday, the course was not overly busy, and we teed off after only a minor delay. The shot of the day was provided by Tony Scambler, putting his tee shot 3 inches from the hole on the par three 15th green – it could only be Tony who could be seen on the tee fervently encouraging his ball not to go in the hole, as it rolled perilously close! No player in the field managed to get on the green on the par three 13th green, with the tee located on the blues at over 200 yards uphill. Mark Stanley turned in the best score of the day with 40 points to convincingly take the honours in the A flight, whilst Barry Murnin won the three-way countback in the B flight.

Results:
A Flight
1st  Mark Stanley (hcp  13) 40 points
2nd  Tony Scambler (hcp    8) 33 points
3rd   Cyril Wallwork (hcp  11) 33 points
B. Flight
1st  Barry Murnin (hcp 17) 35 points
2nd Neil Griffin (hcp 28) 35 points
3rd  Eddy Kelly (hcp 17) 35 points
Near Pin Winners –  Only 3 near pins were hit today, Mark Stanley, JJ Harney, and Tony Scambler

Bob Keeps On Keeping On Tuesday was our monthly visit down to Emerald, with the course generally in ok condition, the greens were glassy from above the hole, leaving a few tricky comebackers.  Bob Edwards (10) maintained his form, not missing a collect since his arrival, with a 35 pointer, which included a couple of par 3 birdies, courtesy of some nice putts.  Jim Federspiel (14) just edged the recently unlucky Willem on countback of the last 6 holes 13/10 for 2nd spot after both signed for 33 points.  Willem gained some consolation with a NTP, along with Jeff (2) & Jim.     ML's version of good ol' boys JimBob   Mountain Shadow was our Thursday venue, with the course in good condition, although the greens were not quite as fearsome as they can be at times, they still presented a challenge for all.  Jeff Wylie (7) after a slow start, best dealt with the conditions to sign for 34 points.  Next best was a happy Willem Lasonder (21) with 31 points, his lowest tally for a few games, when he has been beaten out of the prize money.  Just goes to show, amateur golf is very much a day to day proposition.  Willem & Jeff (2) again showed the way with the NTPs, while 1 went unwon, resulting in a donation to Banglamung Boys Home.  It was nice to see David & Elizabeth Middleton come back for a game, while on holidays visiting their son. Mulligans LAKESIDE plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days.  Call 0890941841 for...

Aussie Mike Gosden Celebrates Australia Day In Style!

There was just one Aussie, a Pommie/Aussie and a Kiwi/Aussie in the field of 36 to compete at Royal Lakeside Golf Club on Australia Day, 2012. Assembling at Café Kronborg we handed out welcomes to Eric Anderson and Finn Klarkov from Denmark and reassured Doug Maiko that the golf was on today and not the day before when he had presented himself at 0800 hrs. Departing the Kronny at a tad before the scheduled 0815 hrs we arrived at the course just 59 minutes later and as there were a couple of groups waiting to tee off we had time for a quick practice putt. We managed to get our first group away 15 minutes ahead of schedule at 0945 hrs and unlike the time when we were here last month there was practically no wind and it was shaping up to be a fine but hot day. The weather in this part of Thailand is of course terrific at this time of year and the course was in excellent shape although a few of the fairways were fairly dry in parts but the greens were firm & true and fairly slick at times. The consensus of opinion is that the course is considerably tougher than it was before and this was reflected in the scoring as only one golfer played better than his handicap. The going was a bit slow once more and our round was completed in four hours & twenty five minutes.

There were 2 flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 20 and B Flight for 21 and...

She spread her wings and literally flew around the course. Jan Thorn, a diminutive Thai Miss was on the game today winging in with a 41 to take not only first place but to claim the trophy for January. Tied with Jan was Rod Ishii also with a 41 but losing to Jan on the count back. Jan is a familiar sight in the weekly postings but always as a second. Not today. Next closest, and hopefuls until Jan and Rod came in, were Paul Kraft and Kevin Worl with 38 apiece. Ed Kristianson slid in with a 37 and was then off to home in Canada. This 25th of January found the Pattaya Country Club course in really good condition. A couple of the Tee boxes were a bit sandy but grass could still be found. Back at Caddy Shack II, Herbie, the sleeper, Isinaga provided the usual snacks of pretzels, chips and peanuts as well the three types of hot dogs. Everyone had a good time, particularly Paul Donahue, returning after a years absence, for cancer treatments and recuperation, who came in with only 20 points. Paul said it was putter failure.

Browny Continues On His Winning Way!

As opposed to last Monday’s late start this time we had an earlier than normal tee time booked at Bangpakong and I was a bit worried that some would not realize this, but I was underestimating the Kronny crew. Four late cancellations brought the field down to 36 starters so I had to shuffle the groups around somewhat but all were assembled at Café Kronborg eagerly awaiting the chance to once more play at the classy Bangpakong Riverside Golf Club. We welcomed back Mick O’Connor from a few weeks in the UK and newcomer Noboru Okabe from Japan. Departing the Kronny as scheduled at 0745 hrs the 75 minute journey seemed to be over very quickly thanks to some interesting chatting in our minivan which was unusually full with nine passengers. Upon arriving at the course we were soon called to the first tee and the first of our 9 four balls got away eight minutes later than scheduled at 0930 hrs in absolutely glorious weather conditions. As usual the course was in perfect shape with lush fairways and firm & true greens and a I had a hunch that there would be some very good scores on the day – I was to be proved correct. The going was slow however with many groups in front of us and there were several lengthy waits on a couple of the par threes so after a couple of enforced drink breaks our round was completed in four hours & forty minutes.
There were 2 flights...
