The Emerald ( Medal) Are we sitting down comfortably?, if not take the time to put the kettle on, make a cuppa, get the cake out, put the feet up, and listen to the story of the Men and Ladies who over 36 holes fought to be classed as the P.S.C. Champion Golfer. Mind, you will be surprised at the sheer number of winners over this weekend. And why not?. After all we had 130 players and this is the Prime Competition in PSC of the Year. The Emerald Golf Resort was the Host to the Club Championship for 2008, on what can only be described as two glorious days, with plenty of sunshine and a cool breeze blowing, it does not get much better than this, especially as the Course Management were more than helpful, turning all other golfer away, so that the Competition would not be interrupted. This has not been so at some other Courses other Years. On day one, the Golfers were made welcome by the staff at The Emerald, and with all in a good mood they were welcomed by the cheerful Bernie and his able assistant Tim, who was distributing the Club Shirts. This is a tough Course most days, but is also very hilly and it is a typical Nick Faldo trick to make all your lies, whether fairway or rough, not level. The ball is always on a downslope, upslope, below your feet or above them, take any normal lie as a gift from the Gods. The greens also are usually 'Up There in the Sky' , and they are small. The par 3's are really fine on this Course and are some of the best and most difficult around. At the end of the first day we had some quite good scores in, but do not forget this is a two day Competition, so for those who would not perform at the top level we had a Prize for the Friday Net Winners and these were, in the A Flight 'The Golf Chairman' Tony Oakes with a net 70, with Brian Downey winning the B Flight with a Net 77. In the C Flight the Winner was Per Olaf Baarli with a net 73 with David Foulk winning the D Flight with a net 70. The Ladies Net winner was Mod Churaiska with a net 75. First Day Net Winners with Dennis Willet PSC President
We are now into the second day where all the winners are decided, and there are a lot of them, I suppose the papers will spoil the surprise by putting out big headlines like XXXX wins Club Championship, me I like to start a book at the beginning and find the surprise at the end. So I have put the coffee away and have had a G&T. So to the second day. The second day dawned bright and beautiful, and all those who had played well on the first day decided to give it a go and all were on the tee nice and early, most bright but a few bleary eyes were noticeable. This is PSC after all. The Organisers were at their duties with Bernie and Tim in evidence, while Tony dashed back and forth, an action sure to enhance his golf. Then we were away for this important 18 holes and the realisation of some players major dreams of the Year. Suffice to say everyone gave of their best, and as the cards came in the results threw up some interesting winners. As is the normal with this Competition, the prize giving was to be at The Town In Town later in the day, so many golfers left hoping they had done well enough to win, and this also gave the Organisers time to work on the results and winners. As you will see this was a really difficult job. All met at The Town In Town where the Hotel had laid on a very fine spread, it has to be said that this being a golfer is not all about sweating it out in 'A Walk Gone Wrong', sometimes it is quite civilized and this was one of those times. We also had drinkies at a good price so some had the odd beer, or two. Well done the Organisers. Food over we got down to the real stuff, the winners in various categories, but not before Tony said thank you to The Course, The Hotel, all the players and his helpers. Them our Emcee, our Nigel, got down to declaring the winners. In sort of ascending order we will start with the 'Gross Winners' in all the Flights. In the A Flight the winner was Clive Bruce with a fine Gross 75 while in the B Flight the winner was Stan Everingham with a Gross 87. In the C Flight the winner was John Hughes with a Gross 87 while in the D Flight the winner was Norman Best with a gross 93. The Ladies Gross winner was Mam Trayling with a Gross 97. So to the 2 Day Flight Winners and in the Flights we had some really fine tight results. In the A Flight the winner was Bengt Borg with a fine net 140 , while we then had a countback for second on net 141 which saw Anders Bokmark in second and Tommy Borkland in third. The Scandies came through again. In the B Flight it was a little more cut and dried with Richard ( Dick) Warberg winning with a net 144 in front of Paul Walia in second with a net 146 and Alan Hughes in third with a net 146. We had a real fight in the C Flight when after 2 Days the first three came in with the same score, a net 146, and a countback came into play. The winner was Eddie Bielby with Donald Wilson in second and Tom Breslin in third. The D Flight was again quite tight with all three players within 4 shots. The winner was Jan Johannson with a net 145 ahead of Joe Clines with a net 147 and Keith Johnson with a net 148. Then we had the Ladies where the winner was Lar Mawford with a Net 138 ahead of Pid Overgren in second with a net 149. We now get to the exciting bit as we get to the last three Major winners, and I am quite pleased as both my fingers are starting to hurt, time for a top up. In the 'Old Days' the Club Champion here was the 'Man' who won the 2 Day Low Net, but in their wisdom the 'Committee' decided, a few Years ago, to follow the lead of most Clubs and make the best Gross Player the Champion. So the Lowest Net over the two days was Chris Davidson with a Net 138 and well done to the player who in fact played best of all the players to their Handicap over two days. So to the big one's, and the Ladies Champion was Amphan North with a Gross 178. The Mens Champion was Paul Smith with a fine 150 Gross and after 2 Days he was a worthy winner. Well Done Amphan and Paul.
