Phoenix ( Stableford) It looks like the good times are here, and on this day we took advantage by playing Phoenix on their Tuesday Special Green Fee of 700 Baht, and a large Heineken at 100 Baht. The day was fine if a little windy when we started, and the test for the day was to be The Mountain and The Ocean Nines, my own personal favourite.
At the start a little early we were able to get off without too much wait, then it was sail ahead, and we did not meet anyone ahead until well into the second nine. The Course was in it's usual fine condition, but these days, with some judicious and discrete redesign, the Course is becoming much more difficult. This was always one of the main points that the Course was a little too easy, well no more. While not in the top few for degree of difficulty it provides a good test and yet is a pleasure to play.
As we progressed around the wind got a fair bit higher and I feared rain, but it held off. A couple of things reminded me not to get too complaisant about where we were as a couple of times the ball was covered in Red Ants, and I hit the ball into a tree and as played my shot I was dive bombed by Hornets, the big ones and stung twice. Be careful all the time.
So round over we sat in the Restaurant and a couple of players tried out the special, a large Heineken for 100 Baht. One even got brave and ordered a small one to follow it, and was a bit surprised when the bill was 180 Baht. He forgot this is Phoenix. So back to Bert's and it did not take too long.
The results were that the players played quite well, and the Winner with 36 points was Frank Pilkington. In Second we had Dick Warberg with 34 points on countback over Mark Brenton in Third. In fourth we had Mashi Kenata with 33 points on countback over Colin Cronin. We then all road tested some of Bert's food and his 'Golfers Special Beer. T.T.F.N.
