P.S.C. Fishing From Tropical Bert's
Saturday The 21st July 2007

On Friday Night as I looked at the Sea, the wind freshened and the rain blasted in from the Sea. The first worries settled in, would it continue until tomorrow, as we were going fishing, I hoped. As it is the quiet time of the Year there was only myself and 'The Single Handicap Fisherman', and if the Wind kept blowing there would be nobody.
Early next morning as I looked over the balcony, there was no Wind, the Sea was calm as a Millpond, and the day ahead looked great. Then the hammer hit, 'She who shall be obeyed' decided it would be a 'Girls day out', and zoomed off to the Market for goodies, like trees and leaves and grass. Then back home to put up stacks of food for the girls picnic, while Chris and I hauled the fish in, we hoped.
Driving down to the Boat, we were told that Bua's friends were waiting at the boat, and I realised my quiet day out was in jeopardy, however I also suspected that at this time of the year the fish started to return to the area, so I lived in hope. The freezer could do with a top up. However it has to be said that the fishing of the last few years has not been as good as the fishing of several years ago. This, in our opinion, is due to 'The Sea Rapists' , who drop their nets all over the place, even in the Bays near the coast, and suck up all the fish, big and small. Will they never learn?.
The boat was reasonably easy to get onto, the water being at a decent height, and with the 'Ladies' on board we were soon underway. With the Sea flat no cases of leaning over the side was expected, and so it proved.
A nice slow bimble out so the Ladies could catch up on what had happened since yesterday, and lay a few eggs, and we were soon out to the fishing area. This is the time the Captain gets the big lines out, and we can test the speed of the water to see if we can also fish with the small lines.
Of course, as we tested, one of the lines zipped out, and Chris jumped on it and after a fight pulled in a fine Trevally of 4 Kilos or so. Then a break while the people settled, and then one of the lines zipped out and I brought in a Trevally of 6 kilo or so, so at least the food for the night was assured.
With the Sea running fast the Captain decided to go for a drive around, and none of the spots were productive, so with the tide slowing, about 1400hrs, we returned to the original spot and got the big lines out and relaxed. Suddenly one line really screamed out and something really big was on, but also the line next to it went, and as they do, the lines tangled around each other, and the big one snapped, or was bitten through, whilst we got the other one in, another Trevally. The wire trace on the other was snapped so it was a big fish, with big teeth, but oh where were the Cobia.
Well we found out, because about 30 minutes later another line zoomed out and Chris was on board. The fish, after an initial run, came straight to the boat and straight under it, then ran down one side whilst the rods were moved, under the anchor rope, and around the boat again. We then saw it was a largish Cobia, and it lead Chris one Devil of a fight until it was finally landed. The fish was 10 kg. Now we have landed many fish, but size for fight, this ranks right up there, and we knew the Cobias were there.
One last surprise, the balloon went, and the Captain pulled in a fish. Best I could make out it was a Gar of some type, but it was blue all over where a Gar is normally green. The joke is that nearly every fish we land the Captain calls it alloy. This was a Thom mai alloy fish.
Well a great day over we trundled in. So T.T.F.N.
