P.S.C. Fishing From Tropical Bert's

Saturday The 20th January 2007

We had a new fisherman on the boat, young Irishman called Bobby who has just spent 18 Months in Australia, and is here for a few months on his trip around the World. Soon to go home he had tried the twenty people on a boat way, and really wanted to catch a fish bigger than three inches, so why not join us.
On this day the weather looked superb, a little overcast with the Sea not particularly choppy, but getting on the boat it was obvious the water was as high as we could remember it. Onto the boat at Saddahip Pier, and a steady chug out to the fishing grounds was in order. However on the way we noticed fish jumping and swirling in the water, and it soon became obvious we were surrounded by large numbers of bill fish.
As we all know, when they are playing around you they are not really interested in food, but still being fishermen, and astounded by the numbers, we decided to have a try and anchored and got the big lines out. All around us the fish played and we had one run with the big line, but when the line was reeled in we found only the hook with a little squid on.
After an hour or so the Captain decided that despite the fact there were still swirls in the water, we would go to where we hoped the fish were hungry. So off we went, stopped, anchored and prepared to get the lines into the water.
Lo and behold, before all the lines were in the water, two screamed out, and despite one of them not producing a fish, the other was soon the scene of a big fight as Chris battled with a Cobia that put up a good fight. However Chris is a single handicapper fisherman and soon the first fish of the day was on board.
Bobby meanwhile was fishing off the side of the boat and in fact was quite successful. In short time he managed to pull in a fine Sweetlips and a small Cobia on the small line. The rest of the fishermen meanwhile rested, with closed eyes.
Soon a big line went out again, and this time Nigel was on the line and this time he also pulled in a fine Cobia. Bobby was meanwhile fishing on, and as the line screamed out again the Captain said one word, 'Big', and Bobby was on the line. Unfortunately it shook the hook and Bobby was still waiting for a 'Big Un'.
Time passed and Bobby continued to fish with the small line, but by this time he was putting more bait on a bigger hook on the small line. Then a curious thing happened, his line started to go out on the small line, in fact it started to accelerate, and as the line was stripped from the reel, the speed rose until the fish just went, and Bobby had an empty spool. Most curious.
Still in a stare of shock the big line screamed out, and this time Bobby was into a fine Queen Fish, and as he fought it , it continually jumped out of the water until finally it was brought abroad. Bobby finally had his big fish, and a fine fish it was. The day was cooling and it was time to go home.TTFN
