Many older members will have no problem identifying the handsome gentleman pictured above as he has been around town for longer than most. For the newer members that have not played golf from the Kronberg Café, ridden a Harley with the Jesters or tried to get into a PSC party without a ticket then they would not recognize Bjarne Nielsen. Bjarne has been a member of the Pattaya Sports Club almost from the Clubs inception and has served on the Executive Committee for most of that time. He has served in most areas and has held his current position as Club Registrar for many years. As mine host of the popular Kronberg Café Bjarne has made his premises available to PSC golfers since the early days of organized competition in Pattaya, and it still remains one of the most popular golfing venues to this day. Much of today’s club structure was decided over a few beers at the round table in the Kronberg and the clubs first functioning office was located at the Kronberg with Khun Orr as the first employee. Many of the PSC’s major tournaments originated at the venue, the Club Championships the Charity Classic and the Memorial Trophy commemorating Carl Lisetivan, Dr Sam and Alec Chilcott to name a few, Papa Ray’s Birthday and Thanksgiving Tournaments were played from there and Bjarne’s Monthly Mug and Birthday Scramble still continue to be hugely popular. However this piece has little to do with golf it is really to recognize Bjarne’s contribution in another area. It is well known that Bjarne has always been a generous sponsor and supporter of the PSC and has also found time to take part in most of the Jesters fundraising activities and personally given many a customer a hand when they most needed it. What is not well known is that for the past eight years he has made a monthly visit to the Bang Chang area on behalf of the PSC to distribute goods to the needy. This began at the Bang Chang Community Hospital where the need was for milk formula for babies whose mothers were HIV positive and unable to breastfeed. For more than four years until the need was satisfied Bjarne arranged the purchase and delivery of the product with little assistance. It was greatly appreciated by all who benefited by it
He then shifted focus to the small Community Hospital at Kilosip located on Hwy 331 near the junction with Sukhumvit there they have an outreach programme that visits aged and infirm residents of the area. With the same funding as previously supplied by the club Bjarne opted to continue his service by purchasing and delivering dry food and toiletries to be distributed by the hospital. He has done this continuously for the past 3 years even while suffering a badly broken leg.
Pattaya Sports Club rewarded his service some years ago with Life Membership and the Sattahip Community Hospital recently recognized his good work with a presentation of a plaque for his services. If any of our members deserves this recognition for his service it is Bjarne Nielsen.
As Charity Chairman for the past six years I have greatly appreciated the help he has given me in this area, my personal thanks to you Bjarne for a job well done [but don’t stop yet].
B. Tuppin Charity Chairman.
