A programme started by Rick Bevington four years ago continues to grow. The concept is to reward children with a bicycle for community work or by being helpful in their school home or anywhere that good deeds are welcomed. The children are selected with the assistance of Mercy Ministries, The Full Gospel Ministry and the Pattaya Sports Club. Rick and many of his friends support the project financially. They have plans to expand in the future by introducing a bicycle road safety programme into local schools.
On this occasion 12 children from School 7 were the happy recipients of a new bicycle [complete with helmet and lock & chain supplied by PSC]. A further presentation of 10 bicycles will be made on Friday 9th March 07 at the Pattaya Full Gospel Ministry. Rick hopes to have his own website operating soon, in the meantime the Pattaya Sports Club website charity section has details of the Bikes for Tykes programme. Anyone interested in helping can contact Rick via the PSC Charity Chairman.
Bikes 4 Tykes
AN UPDATE Feb 3- 08
This project is the initiative of one of our members Rick Bevington; he is a long time member of the PSC and like most others enjoys his golf on his regular visits to Thailand. As his working career winds down Rick spends more time in the Land of Smiles and soon discovered golf was not enough to keep him occupied. Being a keen cyclist himself he decided to donate a few bicycles to under privileged children and approached me to seek out worthy recipients. I put him in touch with Mercy Ministries who are involved in catering to the poor and needy in our community and Bykes for Tykes evolved.
Just recently two presentations were made of twelve bicycles at each of two local Schools. The expressions of joy and gratitude displayed by the children as they received their new wheels was worth the effort. For each bicycle that Rick supplies PSC donates a safety helmet and a lock to secure their precious gift.
Rick to this stage has born the majority of the costs personally with a few close friends helping out, if you would care to be involved Rick can be contacted on his Mob. 086 0724109 or you could contact me via the club. For a child that has previously walked several kilometers to school and running family errands each day, the humble pushbike is a treasure and the cost is less than a days golfing.
Pictured below are some photos of the most recent donations. There were 12 bicycles presented to children of Pattaya City School number 4 and 12 more to children of School number 7. The joy of these kids was surpassed only by that of Rick himself as he personally presented each child with their new transport.
